Pax Autocratica Beginner Guide: First Colony

A source-checked Pax Autocratica beginner guide covering the colony loop, citizen jobs, expeditions, Roguelite Cores and the limits of Early Access advice.

The short version

The safest way to approach Pax Autocratica is as a connected loop rather than two separate games. You maintain a colony, assign citizens to useful work, prepare a squad and then enter a first-person Roguelite expedition. Resources and Cores from that run feed the next round of construction, research and combat choices.

The official Steam listing confirms the systems in that loop, but it does not publish a single optimal opening order. The advice below separates confirmed mechanics from practical reading order, so it remains useful while the Early Access build changes.

Build a stable base first

The game starts with a small group of survivors. Steam says citizens can mine, gather, haul, research and manufacture weapons, armor, food and supplies. That means your first priority is not a large army; it is a base that can keep people fed and keep production moving while a squad is away.

Watch which jobs are actually staffed before you leave. A production chain that looks complete on paper can still stall when a citizen is reassigned, injured or unavailable. The store page also describes policies, comfort, fear and prosperity as tools of rule, so colony management is more than placing buildings: it is a continuing trade between output and social stability.

Prepare the first expedition

Expeditions are the other half of the loop. The official description places you in fractured Tyris System territories to gather resources, conscript citizens and trade with wandering merchants. You also fight alongside troops in chaotic first-person encounters and can bring weakened enemies back to your base.

Before an expedition, confirm that your squad and supply situation can absorb a bad run. The store page presents soldiers as active combat partners, not decorative followers, and later battlefields can include infantry, vehicles and mechs. It is therefore reasonable to treat a surviving squad as a long-term resource, even though the store page does not publish a universal “best roster.”

Read Cores as run-building tools

Pax Autocratica uses Roguelite Cores to make each expedition different. Weapon Cores reshape how guns handle. Combination Cores create synergies between sets, while other Cores strengthen troops or turn them into sacrificial shields. The first useful question is not “which Core is strongest?” but “which Core supports the squad and weapon plan I can actually keep alive?”

Avoid copying a tier list from another build. The game is in Early Access, and the official page explicitly says more content and balance work are planned. Record what changed after each run, then adjust the next expedition around the resources and people your colony can reliably support.

What this guide does not promise

No official source confirms fixed starting resources, a mandatory first building, exact citizen counts or a universal first-hour route. Search snippets that claim precise opening numbers should be treated as unverified until they point to a current Steam announcement or in-game documentation.

For a beginner-friendly path, use the official Steam listing as the mechanics baseline, then keep the release and roadmap briefing nearby as the build evolves.
